Bristol: The Blitz and the City We Lost app for iPhone and iPad

Walking through Bristols streets nowadays, its hard to appreciate the enormous impact of the Blitz, but if you look carefully, you can still find many traces of the damage done, as well as glimpses of what the city looked like before the arrival of Hitlers Luftwaffe.

Thousands of old buildings, some of major historic or architectural importance, were completely obliterated. This app gives you info on what old Bristol was like, and the effect the Blitz had, through an audio commentary, and using archive photos and film.

There are two ways of accessing the content: either browse it on your iphone/ipod/ipad, or walk it as a tour in Bristol! The tour uses the iphones GPS to play the right audio clips, and show the right archive images and films in the right places as you walk around Bristols old city. Its a leisurely walk, which takes 50-60 minutes. (N.B. not yet available for iOS 5)

This tour is based around the city center area of Bristol, UK.

If you cannot get to Bristol, the application includes a browse mode, which allows you to select and view the content from a list.

This app uses archive photos and film footage very kindly provided by Bristol Record Office, and other pictures from Bristol City Museum & Art Gallery.
